Wild Animals in the Media

WILD ANIMALS IN THE PRESS & ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Each year, Born Free receives thousands of communications from supporters worldwide regarding reports in the media involving animal cruelty or suffering. We keep a close eye on press and media sources ourselves, but we are extremely grateful whenever relevant media articles are flagged with us, as they may contain useful information.

Rest assured that Born Free works hard to tackle as many problems facing wild animals as possible. Our priority is to spend our time working to help individual animals. Therefore, we are not able to respond to emails or reports concerning animal stories and articles in the media. Any news and updates on the numerous issues on which we work will be made via our website and social media sites, as well as in the literature distributed to our supporters on a regular basis.

Born Free is a member of the Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition (SMACC), working together to stop animal cruelty online.

Videos and images containing animal cruelty content are frequently posted on social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok, many intended as a form of sick entertainment; promoted, shared and often monetised. If you have seen animal abuse or exploitation content posted on social media platforms, please report it directly to the platform and also send a report via the SMACC online form.

Born Free is also campaigning to end ‘Selfish Selfies’ – the practice of taking and sharing photos using captive wild animals as photo props. Find out more on our Selfish Selfies campaign page.
